A Professor's Classroom Chronicles
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds. Each classroom was like a unique universe. Sometimes I was met with excited and curious eyes, while other times with tired and indifferent gazes. Keeping students engaged, especially during long lectures, was always a challenging process.
One day, I decided to change my teaching approach. Instead of long, intense lecture blocks, I began offering shorter and more focused lessons. Just like athletes achieve better results with short, intense workouts, I realized that students learned more effectively with shorter and more attentive lessons.
Of course, shortening the lessons wasn’t enough on its own. I needed to ensure active student participation. To reinforce the material, I started giving short quizzes at the end of each class. I also collected anonymous questions to understand where students were struggling. This helped me plan the next lesson more effectively.
I also strengthened the connection outside the classroom by creating a website. Students could ask questions and receive quick feedback there, which empowered them to take greater ownership of their learning process.
Most importantly, I focused on keeping students motivated. A motivated student is more successful and happier. Discovering students' interests and connecting the course material to their passions helped engage them more deeply.
Working with international students from different cultures has also been an unforgettable experience. Contributing to their learning journey and seeing their successes has always brought me immense joy. These experiences not only helped me improve my teaching methods but also deepened my understanding of the student learning process.
